I have a confession to make: I used to eat Chipotle for lunch at least twice a week. While this wasn't the best move for my pocketbook, it did not derail my weight loss plan. Despite eating out daily (Chipotle was one of many lunchtime spots), I managed to consistently drop 1-2 pounds a week (with regular exercise). Now, I'm not suggesting that you adopt my habit because bringing your lunch is almost always a better choice than eating out, but I use this an example because sometimes life gets in the way. Try as we might, we may not always be as prepared as we'd like to be and in those times you need to be armed with the information to make the best possible decision given the situation. That's where these Better Choices Spotlights come in.
Let's take a look at a few variations of my favorite item on the menu, the Chicken Burrito bowl:
Chicken Burrito Bowl with rice, tomato salsa, cheese and lettuce
425 cals, 18g fat, 24g carbs, 42g protein
Not bad huh? Sure you could do better, but this is decent for a meal out.
Let's add a few ingredients and see what happens...
Same as above but add black beans and sour cream
Add 225 cals, 11g fat, 29g carbs, and 11g protein!
Yep, that's 680 cals,28g fat, 53g carbs, and 52g of protein (that's the only good increase).
In addition to the black beans and sour cream, let's throw in some guacamole and chips.
To #1 add, 972 cals, 46g fat, 123g carbs, and 12g of protein.
Grand total? 1397 cals, 64g fat, and 147g carbs!!! Oh yeah and 54g protein.
Amazing isn't it? A meal that started off at 425 calories is now an entire day's worth of calories! Butwe've now learned that by making a few minor adustments (option 1), you can enjoy a meal out without wrecking your eating plan. You don't have to give up all of your favorite foods, but moderation and modification are key.
